I would say the first season of the reboot was... pretty good. Not perfect, definitely stuff I think they could improve upon, but there's plenty enough to enjoy for fans old and new alike.

The show's strengths definitely lie with the hillarious animation, the top notch voice acting (Paulsen, Harnell and MacNeille still got it), the orchestral music and for sure, the writing is often more hit than miss. I could understand why some critics might believe the same charm isn't there -- mainly due to the original creators not being invited back -- but no doubt there is still a lot of effort being put into this by people who respect the source material. Nothing about it feels lazy.

That being said, there are a few segments that could have been condensed down and this is especially where the lack of most of the original series' cast (the irreplacable Slappy Squirrel, the Goodfeathers, etc) is sorely felt -- whether this was a creative choice or the studio, one can't be sure. The first season's desire to be timely also runs the serious risk of some episodes and jokes being dated. It's widely agreed Animaniacs is at its best when it's being timeless and when they are here, it's a barrel of laughs. I just hope the writers tilt the scale more towards timeless going forward, and with any luck, maybe we'll see some of the old cast again. I mean, who doesn't miss 'Good Idea, Bad Idea'?

I'm looking forward to Season 2 next year. There is definitely something of worth here and I'm interested in seeing what they do going forward.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This new animaniacs seemed like it would be fun but that's how cheap reboots work. This reboot is like all others playing nostalgia in order to cover the lack of much else substantial. Some of the jokes are decent but about half of them are about them being a bad reboot. Just cause you make jokes about a problem with the show doesn't make it better. All the jokes are way too safe. The old show took risks and was much better than this garbage. Expand

I really enjoyed the show and hope that with more episodes the writers can feel more comfortable with the characters in order to create new adventures for these characters than must be considered like classics.

So, I watched the original ANIMANIACS, it was a fun show to watch on a Saturday morning, I was disappointed to see the lack of the original characters but became fine with it when I learned most would return for Season 2.

That being said, the show is a bit too self-aware and pokes a bit too much fun at it being a reboot, I hope it goes back to the original formula in Season 2. The pinky and the brain segments aren't too funny and boring. Not much to them but overall, fun.

As a fan of the original Animaniacs who was born around the time it was ending, even I was able to enjoy the jokes and gags in the original. Coming in to a reboot, you would expect at least some similar quality comedy, but no. Animaniacs (2020) is basically two heavy-handed, politically charged, unfunny Warner Bros. segments surrounding one Pinky & The Brain segment, which is usually pretty good and the only reason my score is giving points at all. The jokes in 2/3 of the show land on their ankles. The soundtrack is so forgettable that I can't even conjure any of the themes in my head while writing this. The theme song has been tweaked in small ways, be it lyrics or animations, that detract from any feeling that this show isn't a shill (trolls WOULD say that you're passé, Animaniacs, except that the originals are still very much timeless.) The animation is very sterilized compared to the original seasons, and it altogether just feels... Muted. Almost all the jokes are just appeals to what the writers think millennials may like, at the cost of SO many of the ideas and bits of zany humor that made the originals classics.

I was so excited to see them come back. Now I wish it never happened.

It feels VERY different and lacks a few dynamic qualities of the original show. I'd go ahead and consider this another timeline if you want to be the least offended by the considerable changes in atmosphere and absence of characters. The warner brothers and sister like to take sides on politics now, I guess, and Dot seems a little overly bitter than before with the multiple-time usage of "mansplain," along with some clear disdain for men in the final episode. I'm not used to Dot being so intense and I'm not sure if I enjoy the shift in character, but it doesn't ruin anything for me- its just kind of "eh..." Yakko and Wakko are most entirely unchanged though, same goes for Pinky & the Brain. They feel great and super in character at all times.

And then there's the other issue, the lack of characters...
I understand that this reboot most likely wants to get its feet off the ground before introducing its large cast back immediately, as its been over 20 years, but it can still feel hollow and empty at times, especially in its opening where the full cast would walk in stride together. The particular omission of Hello Nurse seems in good faith, but I truly feel they should have brought her back, regardless. Her gag might not have been awfully funny, but being overly affectionate and horny is...well, a feature of all three of the siblings! People tend to forget that even Dot would latch onto men and kiss them uncontrollably- and now none of them get to express that core feature to their original character it seems- for better or worse. The jokes still land at least 80% of the time and if you ever find yourself bored with the current situation, Yakko will typically speak for you. Solid 8 for me.

This reboot is terrible and ruins the show!! Keep the politically correct jargon out of the show and stick with what actually works. The humor was forced and geared towards a liberal audience. With politics being so charged in today's world, it's a good idea to avoid it. Plus, there are a lot of Trump supporters who wouldn't appreciate him being portrayed as he is in the show. If you're going to include politics at least be equal with how their portrayed. Don't portray one side as a hero and the other as a total idiot. What a major let down this show was for me! I won't be watching anymore past the first 2 episodes. Expand

It's not quite on the same level as the original series yet, but for what it is so far, it's still Animaniacs! It still has plenty of hilarious jokes, the characters are still fun, and the writing is still for the most part top notch!

A nice remake. Loyal to the original, although much more gross graphic stuff which lowers the score
