    Knowing the Williams brothers' labyrinthine plots, anything is possible. Domestic violence is obviously an important subject that drama should address. I just don't think that this garish thriller is the way to go about it.

    It is Froggatt’s performance that stops the story drifting into absurdity or becoming a trivialising, exploitative endeavour. This, I suppose, is good enough.

    It is ambitious to balance a tough domestic violence drama with something more theatrical and here, while the realism and mystery elements worked in their own right, the two felt slightly disconnected.

    There are also car chases, and a potential murder plot, but the opening episode is at its most powerful when it hones in on Angela’s experiences of abuse and violence in her own home.
