LOVE this season. Angel and co. taking over Wolfram & Hart is beyond clever. Gun's brain boost is a plot-driving stroke of genius. Add Spike and take away Cordelia, and you have the very best Joss could have offered.

After a relatively disappointing fourth season Angel hits the ground running from the opening episode. The introduction of Spike as a regular cast member, and his ‘relationship’ with Angel is a master-stroke, and as well as an interesting season long story arc, we’re also treated to some fantastic stand alone episodes including the brilliant ‘Smile Time’. There’s even time to fix the mess that was Cordelia’s original departure. The only slight disappointment is the sudden cancellation that left us with a cliffhanger ending that was only resolved in the subsequent comic book series.

The final and also best season. Angel and his friends are in charge of the Wolfram & Hart Los Angeles branch. This set up alone got hooked me up but it got even better. This set up alone got hooked me up but it got even better. Spike and Harmony are added to the team. Spike is one of the best vampires and Buffyverse characters. Harmony is so enjoyable, always happy and smiling but inevitable evil. With Eve and later Marcus Hamilton we got some interesting liaison to the Senior Partners. But it is not only the new characters. All the old characters got interesting arcs and developments. Gunn pays a high price. Fred delivers her best performance and an impactful transition. Wesley is also hit hard by fate and life decisions. Lorne has maybe the time of his life but there is also much behind his facade. For Angel it is a meaningful arc. He has now the power to archive more than ever but does this make him happy? Also you never know what the true agenda of the Senior Partners is. Wolfram & Hart is much bigger and Angel is the leader of only a (powerful) branch. We got another character I wont spoil back. It feels natural that he returns because of his connection and rivalry with Angel. I will stop praising here because you got the best mixture of good stories, humour and character development this show had produced. There are a lot of favourite episodes: Just Rewards introduces Spike directly from Buffy season 7 final episode with a serious handicap and thrown into a good story. Unleashed introduces Nina and the horrors of Nouvelle Cuisine (Not kidding). Hell Bound gave us the interesting character Pavayne and shows Spikes resolve. Now to one of the two grandiose funny episodes: The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco. It has elements of Mexican Wrestling and the Day of the Dead. I had rewatched this episode often and it is still so entertaining. Destiny deals with Spike and Angel. Also what effects being the CEO of Wolfram & Hart had on Angel. Harms Way gives us an episode staring Harmony. You are Welcome is the best mid season final of the show and has the return of a familiar character. This is a must see episode and has an impact for the things to come. Why we Fight is a flashback episode with an interesting story not connected to the main arc. Smile Time is the other hilarious funny episode. I wont spoil but say Jim Henson would be proud. A Hole in the world / Shells is a game changer with lot of impacts for all characters. Origin wraps up Connor and the prophecy around him. With Power Play and Not Fade Away we get the awesome final. It is a fitting end to the Angel series theme. Be warned: For me it is a good and fitting ending but also slightly misses the line to disappointment. Overall the best and most entertaining season and my absolute recommendation. Expand

For a show with such superb acting -- all honor to Boreanaz, who's got macho vulnerability down to a smooth essence not achieved since James Garner in his 'Rockford Files' days, and to Amy Acker, who has gone from victim to sexpot to villain without ever hitting a false note – 'Angel' is surprisingly rife with leaden lines like 'Rules can be broken; all you have to do is push hard enough.'
