    Angel Beats is an Anime which I was unsure about when going into it, since I usually love Comedy or Drama, however this focuses on Action as well. I started watching and I was very pleased with it overall, it was produced by the same company (Key) who made my other favorite Anime "Clannad", and it shows here over how well thought out the story and setting is. The setup is brilliant and at least for me was unique, its a world where you end up if you die feeling your life was unfair, and this helps you feel why the characters are trying to fight against the "Bad guy" which is simply called "Angel", which seems to have the upper hand during the action portions of the episodes. The soundtrack is great as well, I often find myself listening to the theme "My Soul, your Beats!" while playing games since its so good, and other songs which play during the show are also memorable like in "Clannad". Why am I not rating this a ten? Well, there is a plot hole to do with the story which I will not go further in to because it would spoil a major revelation in the story. Overall, this is my second best anime due to how unique and enjoyable it is to watch and I just wish it went on a bit longer, the action, comedy and touching moments are all great but some of the supporting characters could have used a full episode focused on their back-story as opposed to just having a personality to go off when judging the character. This is an anime I would pop in any day and watch a few episodes of over just how entertaining it was as a whole, highly recommended to any one who loves anime or wants to start getting into it. Be warned, have a box of tissues for the last four episodes. ;)… Expand

    Normally when I go into an anime, I look for action, and adventure. I look for a large cast and a long run time to develop that cast. But with angel beats, I sort of strayed off that path a bit. I'm not really sure why I chose to watch it, whether it was the appealing visuals or the unique sounding plot. There hasn't been an anime, or any show, that has gotten me this emotionally involved. Ever. At the start of it all, you get introduced to a character named Yuzuru Otonashi, who has apparently died and gone to a special kind of afterlife for people with short, generally unfair lives. The world is made up of a high school campus that the characters visit to relive their youths the way they were meant to. But, a group of classmates who are unaccepting of the cruelty they were put through in their past lives have formed a team to rebel against the system. Otonashi wakes up in the middle of a small battle with amnesia and is taken in by the group. As time goes on and you begin to learn about the characters lives and why they're fighting, you cant help but sympathize for them, and this really leads to some heart wrenching moments that will have you holding back tears, as they learn to let go of their regrets and accept life as it was so they can move on. Although the story was fantastic, the animation, as stated previously, was great along with the sound track. the beautiful coloring and lighting work was able to create a world that truly felt like a dream, and the music only added to it. Some of the OSTs were better than others, but most of them, including the intros and outros, were a pleasure to listen to. Although It seemed a bit too short to properly develop all of the characters, and there were a few confusing and under explained plot points, It all came together nicely to form a vastly memorable experience that actually had me in tears at the end, and wanting more. I guess straying from what you know isn't always a bad thing.… Expand

    BEST ANIME IVE EVER SEEN, and probably will ever see. I have never had any show toy with my emotions as this has. wow... just wow.... WATCH THIS!

    Angel beat was very disapointing, the plot is too simple, compared to shows like Elfen Lied or Stein's Gate who are about the same lenght it's very poor. I personaly didn't like any of the characters because their past and their psychologie weren't deep enough, I seriously think that if you haven't seen shows like: Code Geass, Death note, FMAB you should try to watch them first and thenAngel beat was very disapointing, the plot is too simple, compared to shows like Elfen Lied or Stein's Gate who are about the same lenght it's very poor.     There's not much that can make me cry like a little baby in terms of entertainment media. This did it. And it still does after repeated viewings and even just listening to the right songs in the soundtrack. It's even more powerful if you've lost a friend in a way that would put them in the Angel Beats universe and makes you hope for all the world that it is real for them.     I had no idea what to expect going into this. To be honest, I have a bit of a divided opinion on the series.

    The animation and music are absolutely phenomenal. All the characters look and sound fabulous, clearly a skilled animation team. The music is catchy, original and easy to listen to repeatedly. So with those aspects I have no issue, As for the plot, that's a different story.    I had no idea what to expect going into this. To be honest, I have a bit of a divided opinion on the series.

    As for the plot, that's a different story. Clearly Angel Beats is trying really hard to be something different and introduces a plot and story arch that deviate from the norm. But, it is also all over the place and rarely feels like a cohesive whole. The whole series could have done without the afterlife aspect since most of the time it seems like it is there simply as a convenient plot device to allow gratuitous violence, that is even seen as pointless by the characters. What is the point of using violence and killing each other if none of the characters can die?

    Again, aside from the needless action, the drama on the other hand is really good with some fantastic delivery by the actors and some well written emotional scenes. Even the comedy is well timed and is always good for a chuckle.

    But, a real shame that the entire cast is completely made up stereotypes and tropes we have seen a thousand times before. Character development is decent enough for the main characters, but most of the supporting characters are just there as filler and are barely touched upon (T.K. perhaps being an obvious example.)

    Overall:
    Angel Beats is better than I expected it to be, but no where near what it could be. It is clearly trying to send a message and teach some important lessons, but in doing so it try to do too much in so few episodes. In my opinion this show could have been longer and really should have toned down the action and needless plot twists. The drama of the show and the underlying message is what stick with you and that should have been the focus. Still, I would recommend this to anyone and I would also say, watch it again afterwards as it make far more sense the second time around.    … Expand

    Angel Beats! attempts to do a lot of things. It attempts to excel in action, romance, humor, characters, and plot. And it succeeds in those goals. At some points it is very dark, sometimes it very violent, and sometimes it's hilarious. It manages to create a great balance between them all. It never gets monotonous and sometimes even character deaths, which should be gut-wrenching, are someAngel Beats! attempts to do a lot of things. It attempts to excel in action, romance, humor, characters, and plot. And it succeeds in those goals. At some points it is very dark, sometimes it very violent, and sometimes it's hilarious. It manages to create a great balance between them all. It never gets monotonous and sometimes even character deaths, which should be gut-wrenching, are some of the best funny moments of the series. The major characters are not flat and boring like some other anime series. Rather, they are dynamic and well developed. The romance aspect is used the least in Angel Beats!, but when it is used, it makes the characters even more dynamic. It does suffer from a few faults though. Sometimes the story gets a little convoluted. The "Does God Exist" aspect is a little undeveloped, even though it is a huge plot element in the beginning. Other than that, Angel Beats! is an anime series that is definitely worth watching.… Expand

    Solid Anime series that learns how to take, manipulate, and destroy your feelings as you progress through the show. Characters are great, though not all are completely developed. 8.5/10
