Summary:
On August 8, 2008, the Summer Olympics commenced in Beijing, China. The Games of the XXIX Olympiad were an incredible testament to the human spirit, and served to celebrate the innate sense of competition, teamwork, and pride that is found within all humankind.
The Olympic Games were broadcast on the following NBC Universal Networks: USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD, as well as NBCOlympics.com.
Among the highlights of the Games were American Michael Phelps' record-setting eight gold medals in swimming, Jamaican Usain Bolt's world record in the 100m dash, Natalie du Toit of South Africa competing in the Olympic open water swimming marathon on an amputated leg, and the spectacular Opening Ceremony.
