Summary:
The 2006 Winter Olympics were held in Turin (Torino), Italy, and the surrounding Alpine ski resorts west of the city. The region hosted 2,500 athletes, 650 referees and judges, 2,500 coaches and team officials and 2,300 members from the International Olympic Committee, national Olympic committees and sports federations. In addition, there were 10,000 members of the media and 6,000 guests of Olympic sponsors.
Eighty-four medals were awarded in 15 sports:

The official Turin logo represented the Mole Antonelliana, the landmark of Turin. The design is supposed to depict crystals of ice forming the spire in a web, to represent "new technologies and the eternal Olympic spirit of communion among peoples."
The Opening Ceremony began the Games on Friday, February 10, 2006. Day One of competition took place on Saturday, February 11, 2006. The Closing Ceremony was held on Sunday, February 26, 2006.
Bob Costas hosted NBC's coverage of the Games. Jim Lampley served as host for the daily late night program. Mary Carillo hosted the daily Olympics skating show "Olympic Ice" along with Canadian skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier (2002 co-gold medalists in the pairs competition).
