    At the end of the day, Joker comes off as Scorsese-lite in the same way that Phillips' last movie, War Dogs, did - albeit, with great acting from Phoenix to elevate it, but also a sense of self-seriousness that borders on self-parody and pretentiousness that War Dogs did not have.
  2. The Little Mermaid
    Marshall has captured enough of the magic from the original to entertain longtime fans. Bailey's Ariel is one for the ages, and McCarthy is fantastic as Ursula. With these two ladies on board, The Little Mermaid is a genuine delight.

    Elfman’s directorial feature debut has enough to hold it together, including a tremendous cast and character dynamics that are thoughtful, interesting, and complicated.

    Ambitious ideas and stunning visuals do not make for a great film, but Millepied should consider following his instincts to fight for an all-dance musical for his next feature.

    While its performances are lovely and tender, with the execution somewhat messy in its handling of themes, All My Puny Sorrows doesn’t dig past the surface enough to make a strong enough case for itself.

    Ride
    Ride is an enthralling movie about the lengths a family is willing to go to protect one another, tugging at the heartstrings and leaving an impression long after the credits roll.
  7. The Monkey King
    The heart of the problem is The Monkey King makes its central character, whose story has been told and retold for hundreds of years, uninteresting. Without that spine to hold it together, everything collapses.
  8. Cruella
    Whereas most Disney remakes have been limited by a lack of originality, both in terms of script and character development, Cruella emerges as a much-needed act of rebellion, with the titular character donning an identity invested with true meaning. Needless to say, Cruella is the future.

    What Happens Later isn't without some hiccups in its execution, but with Ryan at the helm, it's impossible not to feel charmed.

    Overall, the pulpier and the dumber it gets, Primate provides a pretty good reason to get to the theater in January. And, it gets pretty pulpy and dumb indeed.

    With such incredible performers as Colman and Cumberbatch at the center of it all, though, it's easy to have a blast. You'll want them to break up just as much as you want them to make up, and that is the most impressive thing of all.

    If Ready or Not was a chess match, Here I Come is tic-tac-toe.

    Blood for Dust
    Blood for Dust is meant to evoke Fargo vibes, but it fails to live up to the 1996 Academy Award-winning movie and will likely be forgotten by most.

    What the film does exceedingly well is make us see the inherent irony of moderating online violence to the exclusion of the real-life violence in front of our faces.

    Get Away does a lot with the resources it possesses and isn't hindered by them, delivering a strong story with fun performances. It has a strong future as a cult comedy horror movie.

    Its charms grew on me so fast that I couldn't help but love almost everything about it, logic be damned.

    The Boston Strangler case may not have come to the fairest conclusion, but the efforts of these brave women will hopefully continue to light a fire under those who will catch their own Boston Strangler. If that was Ruskin’s goal with this film, then he was successful.

    Freaky Tales may not be a perfect film, but it will definitely leave a strong impression on you long after the credits roll.

    Eternity isn’t a bad rom-com; it’s charming and wildly entertaining for the most part, but by skirting a conventional narrative to be more creative, the story loses some of its effectiveness in the process.

    An American Pickle is a fun, fleeting buddy comedy that spreads its humorous premise a bit too thin, minimizing the story's impact.

    With thin character work and a familiar story surrounding it, the movie ultimately proves more disposable than enjoyable.

    As the film marches to its conclusion, one will have some appreciation for the rotoscoping animation, the score, and the voice work from some of the actors. However, the murky narrative structure and the lack of a central protagonist only works against all the gory goodwill the film possessed.

    Freaked
    Freaked definitely isn't for everyone, and in my opinion it certainly shouldn't be rated PG-13 (who made THAT stupid decision???) but as a "beer and buddies" movie you'll find it funny and, well... weird.

    The Midnight Sky is a well-made and ambitious piece of sci-fi filmmaking, but it lacks the proper emotional punch it needed to truly connect.

    Jingle Bell Heist
    At its heart, it is Holt and Swindells’ performances that give the story its warmth and soul — qualities essential to any Christmas movie.
