Ys Origin on PlayStation 4 is a great action RPG that will appeal to anyone looking for a mechanically competent and musically magnificent experience from over a decade ago.

If you're looking for a tense, unnerving experience in a simple yet eerie setting, this is it.

An inventive take on the sliding block puzzle genre, it all just depends on how quickly you get tired of slaughter.

The Road to Boruto DLC has some great combat and cut scenes, but the whole expansion doesn’t feel as grand as the original game did.

Hidden Folks is a little obtuse at times but otherwise it’s delightful and compelling.

If the single-player had been better put together, there would be a lot more to scream and shout about, but the combat and online multiplayer is excellent at times.

Atelier Shallie Plus is a great way to end the Dusk trilogy in the Atelier franchise and suffers from the usual Atelier on Vita problems while still charming me over.

Forma.8 is an utterly gorgeous and affecting take on the familiar 2D Metroidvania style game with some clever puzzles for your plucky little probe to navigate.

Berserk could have been great, but instead it’s an average, repetitive romp that would have benefited from a bit more thought put into what makes it special.

Xanadu Next is classic action RPG from one of my favourite developers with a fantastic score that is let down by a buggy release.

The Banned Footage DLC comes to a close with the finest episode to date, in Daughters, but the rest still feels like content cut from the main game.

Kitty Powers Matchmaker has a wonderful kitsch charm to it, delightfully self-aware and witty. It does start to show its limitations after extended play, but overall it is great fun and pretty much nails the awful dating experience.

It’s been a long time since a game has been put together this well. The combat is awesome, the visuals are stunning, and Aloy is 100% badass.

I know I’ve mentioned Starcraft II a couple of times in this review, but it’s certainly the yardstick by which most RTS games are measured and this one is no different. There are obvious comparisons to be drawn between both games and Creative Assembly certainly wears its influences proudly, but Halo Wars 2 never strays into clone territory. It stands well on its own, creating an experience that combines cinematic storytelling with varied and interesting strategic gameplay, as well as throwing in a few explosions for which Halo is often known. And best of all, it manages to be accessible enough that even a blunt object like myself can finish the campaign.

How to Survive 2 is a much improved sequel, featuring some beautifully looking environments. There are plenty of upgrades for you and your haul, and you’ll lose yourself in the menus if you’re not careful. The music is wonderful at times and it makes tense moments even worse, even if it does remind you of the opening theme song of The Walking Dead. Whether you’re playing with friends, strangers or on your own, How to Survive 2 offers an authentic survival experience that has plenty of replayability.

Kill the Bad Guy puts a unique and violent spin on the puzzle genre with some success, but the repetitive level design and soundtrack won’t keep you coming back.

Divide could have been an interesting, indie sci-fi game, but poor design decisions hold it back.

A solid sharpshooting experience that knows where its strength lie. The open ended nature of each level, as well as the myriad ways to despatch enemies makes each level interesting, but it is the X-Ray kills that remain the centrepiece of this particular franchise.

Uncanny Valley shows a lot of promise, but the harsh reality of its non-linear narrative structure and reliance on multiple playthroughs to make sense of it all means it is asking too much in the face of the early game's uninspired, repetitive gameplay.

One of Nioh’s coolest features is the revenants. These are scattered throughout the levels and are graves of real players and NPCs. When you approach one, it’ll give you the level they were when they died, and what you’re likely to receive if you bring it back from the dead, and then kill it again. You could stumble across a stranger’s grave and fight them as they were when they died; it won’t be you fighting the actual stranger, but it’s a great feature and can get you some decent gear.
