  1. Every performer here brings his or her A-game, and the little nods to the day--such as the chatter about a seminar that will help “actualize” the attendees or the salesman who believes that the electric typewriter represents an unparalleled technological revolution--are both striking and sad.... Fargo is terrific.
  2. The Walking Dead in its sixth season premiere wants you to remember the nightmare started here, and this show owns it.
  3. As an actress, Lady Gaga wears clothes very well. That’s not the dis it seems. The extended 90-minute premiere doesn’t give her much chance to act, or speak, for that matter.... As Dr. Alex Lowe, John’s estranged wife, returning player Chloe Sevigny provides a welcome balance to the over-the-top bloodletting, but as good as she is, the bad soap opera dialogue just proves Murphy and Falchuk have no interest in writing “normal,” whatever that is. They’re here to deliver spectacle.
  4. Some things do [change]. Homeland deepens its story for its fifth season, and this journey might be Carrie’s most treacherous.
  5. The show needs to work on building the urgency to its stories and cutting away the treacle.
  6. He seemed to suffer from “Jimmy Fallon-itis”--he laughed too much at his own jokes.... The show pretty much stayed on point, with almost every joke leading back to Noah. He got to make the show all about him, and that’s OK--for one night, anyway.
  7. Blood and Oil, harkens back to the best elements of “Dallas” and “Dynasty.”
  8. The show does not inspire confidence.
  9. Creator/executive producer Kring hasn’t learned anything from seasons two through four. Heroes Reborn suffers from the same excesses that alienated viewers--too many characters, too many plot threads, too many snippets of scenes that serve to advance little but the time to a commercial break. Finally, the show seems old-fashioned.
  10. Rosewood tries so badly to create the next prime-time super couple, but the duo at the heart of this awkward crime procedural are less together than they are apart.
  11. Scream Queens is just too dumb to be fun.
  12. [An] uneven cross between “The Office” and “30 Rock.”
  13. Limitless may give you an immediate high, but side effects may include listlessness, dangerous plot holes and a sinking feeling you’ve wasted an hour of your life.
  14. Sharp, slick and brimming with visual tricks, Fox’s Minority Report is a trippy sci-fi crime procedural.
  15. While we don’t know the identity of Jane Doe yet, the pilot drops some hefty clues, ones that only touch the surface of what looks to be a compelling conspiracy thriller.
  16. The maestro behind “Sons of Anarchy” returns to FX with this over-the-top gorefest that tries to outdo both “Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead” for spectacle.
  17. No, Project Greenlight doesn’t promise art, but it does deliver drama.
  18. The new Netflix drama is burdened with so much annoying voice-over narration, the series at times falls somewhere between an audiobook and one of the more grittier Investigation Discovery crime shows. This dramatization of the rise of Pablo Escobar into the most notorious and lethal drug kingpin of South America is nonetheless compelling, and the story moves briskly, making it a great bingeworthy treat.

My time spent in Angela's life was a wasted hour in my own so-called life. [24 Aug 1994, p.47]

  19. Burns’ direction is choppy, except for his closing scenes, which are unexpectedly strong. He does know how to end an episode. If only he knew how to begin one.

Marienthal is an energetic young actor, perhaps he'll find something more worthy of his talents after this dismal sitcom's inevitable cancellation. [2 Oct 2000, p.033]

Stern, who starred in the "Home Alone" and "City Slickers" movies, isn't devoid of comic instincts. Perhaps that's why he seems to be going through the motions here with a barely concealed smirk.
  20. [Blunt Talk] is dull, depressing, charm-free, puerile and pointless. You’ll have more fun slapping yourself in the head with a spoon for a half-hour.
  21. Documentary Now! is so good, you’ll be forced to reassess Meyers, whose comedy writing is so crisp and correct, he should give up his late-night NBC show because nothing he does there will ever be as good or as funny.

Occasionally bogged down by hokey dialogue, the drama is ultimately redeemed by a veneer of hope and some wonderful performances, notably Jeffrey Tambor as Travis' cynical bookmaker father and Labine as his follicle-challenged best friend.

  22. Fear resorts to the dumbest of jump scares and runs in circles. You’ll get impatient for a walker to come chomping by. You might be disappointed when one does. An action sequence that caps the extended premiere is choppy and amateurishly directed.
  23. Hawaii's pacing, dashes of humor and casting make this one worthy of an "aloha" - but that's a tentative hello.
  24. Engrossing.... Haggis, who directed all six hours, and Simon have walked this material before.
  25. Where Ties unravels is in its other half, as it desperately tries to be a gritty police procedural.
  26. [A] sweet yet raunchy comedy.
