Love, however implausible, is simply beautiful in Venus.

Ephron's attempt at dark humor isn't a complete payoff overall in Lucky Numbers, but it doesn't fail either.
  1. The real hero here is Ghobadi, whose love and respect for the culture in which he was raised shines through every frame.
  2. It's not meant to be scary. It's meant to be Disney -- a fun and warm children's fantasy.
  3. Gets credit for avoiding the easy path. Too bad the path it chooses doesn't lead us anywhere we want to be taken.

Vintage Chan, with amazingly well-choreographed fight scenes.
  5. Caan is so good as a man who watches helplessly as everything he's worked for crumbles around him, that he steals the picture from both Wahlberg and Phoenix, the ostensible stars.
  6. More of a sales pitch than a movie.

  7. This would be an excellent movie from a first-time filmmaker, but from one of America's premiere directors, it's a disappointment.

The performances of Bell, Walters and Lewis make this movie worth seeing - as long as you silence your cynical side and bring some Kleenex.

    One
Has the fingerprints of earnest, first-time filmmakers all over it.
  9. Misfires by constantly tossing out liberal feel-goodisms.

Stay away from this movie. Brainless cartoonish violence.

  11. Nothing seriously detracts from the film's overall brilliance.

  12. De Niro and Stiller combine to bring on laughs you don't have to feel guilty about.
  13. An unrelentingly dark vision that's as hard to watch as it is impossible to walk away from.
  14. A slice-of-life where being gay is a fact of daily existence, not an excuse for existential dilemmas or grand tragedies.

On the plus side, there's plenty of dry Canadian wit, a handful of songs and only occasional bits of nudity.
  15. Lively and inspirational, with terrific performances from a big star and a host of supporting players.
  16. Unfortunately, whenever Beautiful threatens to work as parody, it veers uncomfortably into pop psychology.

  17. Reaches the highest comic heights when the show itself starts.

  18. Just plain bad.
  19. Lovely to look at and listen to but doesn't reward any closer study.
  20. A film of so much daring, a film that takes so many chances, it's impossible not to be impressed.

The film is a thoughtful, but by no means somber, look at an issue that might strike a particular chord with Jews.
  21. A working-class drama that has its heart in the right place but undercuts itself by stacking the deck, letting its main character off too lightly and being overly impressed with its own profundity.
