Winter TV Preview: 20 Notable Shows
Are you ready for not one, not two, but three different reinventions of the comic book TV series? How about period dramas starring Tom Hardy and Christina Ricci? A look at the life of another English queen, or a fictitious American pope? The return of The Good Wife and 24? Or perhaps all you need is a Series of Unfortunate Events.
Those concepts and more are headed to the small screen between now and early March. Find details on 20 noteworthy upcoming shows (both new and returning series, plus miniseries) below, ordered by date. The CW has become a network of comic book shows, but Riverdale—based on the Archie comics and, like most CW shows, produced by Greg Berlanti—is aiming to be something different. How different? Producers are calling it a "teenage Twin Peaks."
While that might be a stretch, Riverdale similarly attempts to blend a murder mystery with high school romance and surreal elements. Can it really deliver a "surprising and subversive take" on the 75-year-old franchise? The buzz out of a Comic-Con premiere last year suggested that the pilot tries to be too many things at once—but that it also exhibits a welcome sense of humor and self-awareness.
