Winter TV Preview: 20 Notable Shows
Are you ready for not one, not two, but three different reinventions of the comic book TV series? How about period dramas starring Tom Hardy and Christina Ricci? A look at the life of another English queen, or a fictitious American pope? The return of The Good Wife and 24? Or perhaps all you need is a Series of Unfortunate Events.
Those concepts and more are headed to the small screen between now and early March. Find details on 20 noteworthy upcoming shows (both new and returning series, plus miniseries) below, ordered by date. And, for more premiere dates and details on every upcoming show (including those not profiled here), visit our 2017 TV Premiere Calendar.
Possibly one of the oddest TV shows in recent memory to get a second-season renewal—among other things, it's set in the decidedly unglamorous, Costco- and Arby's-filled Bakersfield, California, features Zach Galifianakis playing twin brothers (one of whom is a failed clown) and an Emmy-winning Louie Anderson as their mother—Baskets may be an acquired taste for some. But its low-key (anti-)humor (which comes in part from co-creators Louis C.K. and Portlandia's Jonathan Krisel) is refreshingly different from everything else currently on the air.
This second season begins with Galifianakis's Chip attempting to leave his life behind by riding the rails. Like every other Chip idea, it's not a good one.
