Winter TV Preview: 20 Notable Shows
Are you ready for not one, not two, but three different reinventions of the comic book TV series? How about period dramas starring Tom Hardy and Christina Ricci? A look at the life of another English queen, or a fictitious American pope? The return of The Good Wife and 24? Or perhaps all you need is a Series of Unfortunate Events.
Those concepts and more are headed to the small screen between now and early March. Find details on 20 noteworthy upcoming shows (both new and returning series, plus miniseries) below, ordered by date. Seeking to fill that Downton Abbey-sized hole on your DVR's hard drive, PBS has imported another English costume drama which will air in the same Sunday night Masterpiece slot. Victoria stars Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as the 19th century British monarch of the same name, with the first season depicting her first three years on the throne, beginning when she was just 18. Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), Tom Hughes, and Peter Bowles also star.
The series has already been renewed for a second season and could eventually run for six, spanning Victoria's entire reign—making it an interesting companion to Netflix's The Crown, which aims to take a similarly expansive look at Queen Elizabeth II's life.
