Stephen King Movies, Ranked from Worst to Best
and Joal Ryan, for Metacritic – August 2, 2017

Recent releases It and The Dark Tower have been erected on the most fertile, if haunted, of Hollywood grounds: Stephen King territory.
While conventional wisdom says King's horror tales "don't translate well to film," a Metacritic look at his theatrical releases shows that the vast majority of them received, at worst, mixed-to-average critical notices. Nine films, or about one-quarter of the titles, are in the green.
Dashcam director Rob Savage helmed this 2023 adaptation of King's 1973 supernatural horror story centering on high schooler Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), her younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), and their recently widowed father Will (Chris Messina). The latter is a therapist who makes the mistake of letting the wrong patient into the family home. Originally intended to be a straight-to-streaming title, Boogeyman was shifted to a theatrical release following positive test screenings, and critics seemed to enjoy the film's style and scares even as they deemed it a minor work.
“The Boogeyman is packed with familiar beats and little personality, the horror equivalent of a rising music star making a fan-friendly Christmas album as their biggest project yet.” —Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com
