A few months after releasing Relationship of Command in 2000, Texas punk rockers At the Drive-In broke up, with Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López forming The Mars Volta while the other three members launched the band Sparta. After reuniting for a few live performances in 2012 and 2016, most of ATDI's original members (with Sparta's Keeley Davis subbing in for guitarist Jim Ward) headed to the studio to record this 11-song comeback.
