Spring TV Preview: The 30 Most-Anticipated Shows
Does TV save its best shows for the end of its season? The answer may be yes, given that the next few months will see the returns of acclaimed programs like The Americans, Game of Thrones, Veep, and Catastrophe. There are also some promising newcomers headed to the small screen in the coming weeks, including several Netflix comedies, the latest from Shonda Rhimes, and a drama produced by Steven Soderbergh.
Below, we highlight 30 intriguing shows scheduled to debut between now and early May, listed in order by premiere date. (For information on other upcoming TV debuts, visit our TV Premiere Calendar.)
Though this adaptation lacks the dark humor and unique style of Terry Gilliam's 1996 film, series creators Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett managed to milk a surprising amount of story out of its apocalyptic time-travel premise in last year's debut season, which ultimately proved to be compelling after critics weren't overly enthused at the start. (Plus, it never hurts to have a creepy Tom Noonan.) It's unclear exactly how long the story can be sustained, but season 2 looks promising, with new time periods (including the 1940s and '50s) and new cast members, including Battlestar Galactica's Michael Hogan, Downton Abbey's Brendan Coyle, The Shield's Jay Karnes, and—intriguingly—Madeleine Stowe, who will play a very different role than she did in the film.
