With summer turning into fall, it is time for popcorn films to give way to more serious fare at the cineplex, though September won't be without its genre films—including a promising revival of the Blair Witch franchise. In anticipation of the month ahead, our editors have selected September's most noteworthy new movies, including new titles from Clint Eastwood, Andrea Arnold, Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, and a few intriguing debuts.

Writer-director Michel Franco won an award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival for his screenplay about David (Tim Roth), an in-home nurse who cares for terminally ill patients. The film’s ending divided critics at the festival, but many agreed on the excellence of Roth’s performance.
