12 Films to See in September
With summer turning into fall, it is time for popcorn films to give way to more serious fare at the cineplex, though September won't be without its genre films—including a promising revival of the Blair Witch franchise. In anticipation of the month ahead, our editors have selected September's most noteworthy new movies, including new titles from Clint Eastwood, Andrea Arnold, Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, and a few intriguing debuts.
It has been a good year for horror films. There have been critical darlings (The Witch, The Wailing), box office successes (The Purge: Election Year) and a few that were both (Don’t Breathe, The Conjuring 2). Fans are hoping that the latest from director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, the minds behind The Guest and You’re Next, will fall in the latter category. Originally titled The Woods while its true identity (as part of a franchise) was hidden, the new film's story picks up on the legend of The Blair Witch Project by following a group of college students who venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of one of their sisters.
