12 Films to See in September
With summer turning into fall, it is time for popcorn films to give way to more serious fare at the cineplex, though September won't be without its genre films—including a promising revival of the Blair Witch franchise. In anticipation of the month ahead, our editors have selected September's most noteworthy new movies, including new titles from Clint Eastwood, Andrea Arnold, Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, and a few intriguing debuts.
Clint Eastwood’s latest is another look at heroism but in a very different environment than that of his last film, American Sniper. The story of the “Miracle on the Hudson” is well known to many. On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberg and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River after losing power in both engines. Less is known about the aftermath of the landing and the subsequent investigation into Sully’s choices that day. As in 2013’s Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks plays a real-life character under immense pressure. Maybe this portrayal will earn him his sixth Academy Award nomination.
