12 Films to See in September
With summer turning into fall, it is time for popcorn films to give way to more serious fare at the cineplex, though September won't be without its genre films—including a promising revival of the Blair Witch franchise. In anticipation of the month ahead, our editors have selected September's most noteworthy new movies, including new titles from Clint Eastwood, Andrea Arnold, Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, and a few intriguing debuts.
In his first feature film since 2012’s Savages, Oliver Stone, never one to shy away from controversy (even courting it sometimes), takes on the Edward Snowden story. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Snowden, the CIA and NSA worker who exposed the vast illegal surveillance activities of his employers. Stone looks to be focusing on Snowden’s personal journey, while also fictionalizing what Laura Poitras’ Academy Award-winning documentary Citizenfour captured with so much immediacy. Will this narrative take on Snowden be better than the Julian Assange film The Fifth Estate? Let’s hope so.
