It's the first sequel to 2015's very well-received Pillars of Eternity, itself a sort-of (unofficial) reboot of the Baldur's Gate fantasy RPG series. Developer Obsidian Entertainment has raised an impressive $4.4 million (four times the goal amount) via crowdfunding for the new game, which is set in the same world as the original but is far more ambitious in scope, and allows for much greater freedom in exploration away from the main story.
A new companion system means that relationships play a larger factor this time. You'll also get a customizable ship that serves as your base of operations. If you played the first game, your choices there will impact what happens in Deadfire.
