Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
Which films from 2019 could contend for a best picture Oscar in early 2020? We have surveyed industry experts, reviewed the reviews, and examined the top performers at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 20-ish potential contenders. (They're listed alphabetically in the gallery above.) Of course, the ultimate best picture nominee list will include 10 or fewer titles (likely fewer), so not every one of these films will secure a nomination—but it's likely that all of the eventual nominees will be found in our list. The biggest wildcards are the handful of films that have yet to be screened for anyone; we'll point those out as we get to them.
What is it? A life-affirming look at children's television host Fred Rogers (played by Tom Hanks) through the eyes of a cynical Esquire journalist (Matthew Rhys) who is assigned to write a profile of him.
Why is it a contender? Tom Hanks portraying one of the most universally beloved figures in television history? That oughta do it.
What are its chances? Not quite a sure thing, but good. Very good early reviews out of the fall festivals are encouraging (and the fact that critics find the film more comforting than groundbreaking could be seen as another plus—the Academy doesn't exactly like groundbreaking films). But note that director Marielle Heller's previous film (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, also based on a true story) failed to secure a best picture nomination despite widespread acclaim. And last year's Mr. Rogers documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? was also snubbed by the Academy, to the surprise of many.
When can I see it? November 22nd.
