Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
Which films from 2019 could contend for a best picture Oscar in early 2020? We have surveyed industry experts, reviewed the reviews, and examined the top performers at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 20-ish potential contenders. (They're listed alphabetically in the gallery above.) Of course, the ultimate best picture nominee list will include 10 or fewer titles (likely fewer), so not every one of these films will secure a nomination—but it's likely that all of the eventual nominees will be found in our list. The biggest wildcards are the handful of films that have yet to be screened for anyone; we'll point those out as we get to them.
What is it? Quentin Tarantino's 1969-set opus following a few months in the life of a TV actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pitt), set against the backdrop of the Manson Family's Tate–LaBianca murders.
Why is it a contender? Reviews have been excellent since the film's Cannes premiere in May, and the film was a box office hit when it was released in July. Two of Tarantino's three previous films were best picture nominees, and Hollywood is the best-reviewed title of the bunch. (In fact, it's the director's highest-scoring film in 15 years.) Also, it's about Hollywood and movie and television production—subject matter that Academy voters have a hard time resisting.
What are its chances? It's a lock for a nomination, and is one of a handful of titles that has a legitimate chance be the year's ultimate best picture winner (though its one-time frontrunner status has been yielded to The Irishman).
When can I see it? A DVD/Blu-ray release is set for December 10th. In the meantime, an expanded version (with 10 minutes of new footage across four scenes) recently opened in theaters nationwide.
