Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
Which films from 2019 could contend for a best picture Oscar in early 2020? We have surveyed industry experts, reviewed the reviews, and examined the top performers at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 20-ish potential contenders. (They're listed alphabetically in the gallery above.) Of course, the ultimate best picture nominee list will include 10 or fewer titles (likely fewer), so not every one of these films will secure a nomination—but it's likely that all of the eventual nominees will be found in our list. The biggest wildcards are the handful of films that have yet to be screened for anyone; we'll point those out as we get to them.
What is it? The second film directed by Greta Gerwig (who also wrote the script) and the first big-screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic family novel since Gillian Armstrong's excellent 1994 version.
Why is it a contender? Because everyone says so: It has been mentioned as a likely nominee seemingly since the moment the project was announced. And Gerwig's previous film, Lady Bird, was one of 2017's best releases and a best picture nominee. The cast is also terrific: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Timothée Chalamet are just some of the major names involved.
What are its chances? The one wildcard was the fact that no one had seen the film yet, but that changed late last month when it was finally unveiled to the industry in Los Angeles. While official reviews won't come out until December, the resulting Twitter buzz suggests that Little Women is as close to a sure thing as you'll find on this list. Expect multiple nominations.
When can I see it? Christmas Day.
