Meet This Year's Best Picture Contenders
Which films from 2019 could contend for a best picture Oscar in early 2020? We have surveyed industry experts, reviewed the reviews, and examined the top performers at this year's major film festivals to come up with a list of 20-ish potential contenders. (They're listed alphabetically in the gallery above.) Of course, the ultimate best picture nominee list will include 10 or fewer titles (likely fewer), so not every one of these films will secure a nomination—but it's likely that all of the eventual nominees will be found in our list. The biggest wildcards are the handful of films that have yet to be screened for anyone; we'll point those out as we get to them.
What is it? An Agatha Christie-like (but wholly original) comedic murder mystery from writer-director Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi, Looper) featuring an ensemble cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and Michael Shannon.
Why is it a contender? The film's TIFF premiere in September was greeted by stellar reviews.
What are its chances? Borderline. Critics can't stop talking about how fun it is to watch the whodunit unfold, and if Academy voters are left with similar feelings, Knives Out could crack the best picture field in January. But it could also be deemed too lightweight to be a contender. Awards pundits appear to be split on its chances right now.
When can I see it? Preview screenings nationwide the night of November 22nd will be followed by a proper theatrical run beginning November 27th.
