Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
Previously in theaters (released Feb. 16); now on DVD/Blu-ray. It is the best-reviewed Marvel film in history (and one of the 25 highest-scoring films of 2018, period) as well as the highest-grossing film this year, domestically. But don't think for a second that Black Panther is a lock for a best picture nomination. In fact, the Academy has never nominated a superhero film for best picture, and tends to avoid placing big-budget action movies in that category no matter how successful they are at the box office. (Peter Jackson's Return of the King is the major exception this century.) Disney hopes to change that trend by mounting a major "for your consideration" campaign behind Panther, even at the expense of other Disney films (like Avengers: Infinity War).
