Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
Previously in theaters (released Aug. 10); now on DVD/Blu-ray. The only Spike Lee joint to receive a higher Metascore (documentaries excluded) is his 1989 classic Do the Right Thing. Yet even the latter film failed to secure a best picture nomination, and BlacKkKlansman's late-summer release date and somewhat comedic tone don't exactly scream best picture material. Still, the film's timely subject matter could make it a contender—it's actually one of a handful of films that a consensus of Oscar experts think will get a best picture nomination—and it has already picked up a (semi-)major award, taking home the second-place Grand Prix at Cannes in May. The fact that the film was also Lee's biggest box office hit in more than a decade also works in its favor.
