Series debuts October 6 on The CW. The CW's latest DC Comics series offers something new: TV's first live-action lesbian superhero lead character, Kate Kane/Batwoman (played by Orange Is the New Black's Ruby Rose), who is Bruce Wayne's cousin and also lives in Gotham. Formerly in the military, she now works for The Crows, her father's security service. Dougray Scott, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, and Nicole Kang also star. When the pilot—a mix of campy cartoonishness and dark, gritty drama with visuals reminiscent of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight films—screened at San Diego's Comic-Con over the summer, the reception was generally positive, though some critics noted some flaws in tone and characterization that will need to be ironed out in future episodes.
