13 Films to See in October
October. It's the time of year when the leaves are changing color, election season is heating up, and the Cubs are doing whatever they can to avoid a World Series title. (Well, maybe not this year.) October also marks the return of serious movies to the cineplex as the first batch of this year's awards contenders are unveiled. And there are certainly some noteworthy releases due in the coming weeks, including this year's big Sundance winner, the latest films from Ava DuVernay, Park Chan-wook, Kelly Reichardt, and Terrence Malick, and 2016's highest-scoring film.
The history of rock ‘n’ roll is rife with bands that behave badly, and this month provides a look at two such groups: The Stooges and Oasis. With Gimme Danger, director Jim Jarmusch chronicles “the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band ever” (in his opinion). Led by Iggy Pop, The Stooges brought a raw blend of influences together to produce powerful music and unhinged live performances, shocking the music scene of the late 1960s and 70s. The film is a must for fans of the band, but some critics wish it were a bit more revealing.
Whatever your opinion of them, Oasis were a big deal in the 1990s, selling over 75 million records and topping the charts with the fastest-selling album in British history, Be Here Now. In a “one night only” theatrical engagement on October 26th, fans can re-live the rise and fall of the Gallagher brothers. Find participating theaters here.
BONUS PICK: A third high-profile music doc, Jonathan Demme's Justin Timberlake and The Tennessee Kids, will bypass theaters and stream on Netflix beginning October 12th. Demme previously perfected the concert documentary with 1984's Stop Making Sense, and while his Timberlake film isn't quite as groundbreaking, it is receiving very good early reviews.
