13 Films to See in October
October. It's the time of year when the leaves are changing color, election season is heating up, and the Cubs are doing whatever they can to avoid a World Series title. (Well, maybe not this year.) October also marks the return of serious movies to the cineplex as the first batch of this year's awards contenders are unveiled. And there are certainly some noteworthy releases due in the coming weeks, including this year's big Sundance winner, the latest films from Ava DuVernay, Park Chan-wook, Kelly Reichardt, and Terrence Malick, and 2016's highest-scoring film.
Gianfranco Rosi’s follow-up to his Venice Golden Lion winner Sacro GRA was awarded the Golden Bear prize for best film at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and is Italy's official entry for the foreign language Oscar this year. This documentary looks at the impact of recent refugee arrivals on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa by focusing on the life of 12-year-old Samuele, whose uncle is a local fisherman, and the endless flow of African migrants hoping to find dry land and a new life. According to The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, it is “masterly film-making.”
