13 Films to See in October
October. It's the time of year when the leaves are changing color, election season is heating up, and the Cubs are doing whatever they can to avoid a World Series title. (Well, maybe not this year.) October also marks the return of serious movies to the cineplex as the first batch of this year's awards contenders are unveiled. And there are certainly some noteworthy releases due in the coming weeks, including this year's big Sundance winner, the latest films from Ava DuVernay, Park Chan-wook, Kelly Reichardt, and Terrence Malick, and 2016's highest-scoring film.
Writer-director Kelly Reichardt’s adaptation of three short stories by Maile Meloy focuses on the lives of three women. Laura Dern plays a lawyer dealing with a hostile work environment and a hostage situation. Michelle Williams is a wife and mother trying to build her dream home while battling her husband (James Le Gros). And Kristen Stewart is a law student who forms a tentative relationship with a ranch hand played by newcomer Lily Gladstone. After directing the eco-thriller Night Moves, Reichardt’s return to the small, observational drama of her earlier films Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy earned very good reviews when it premiered at Sundance this year.
