Elegance Bratton’s debut feature follows Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) as he joins the Marines to escape homelessness and reconnect with his mother (Gabrielle Union). Inspired by his own life, Bratton chronicles Ellis’ struggle to hide his sexual identity as his attraction to a drill instructor (Raúl Castillo) grows. While Pope, who will play Jean-Michel Basquiat in his next feature, is the raw center of the film, it’s his co-stars, Union and Castillo, who received nominations from the Gotham Awards for Best Supporting Performance. Bratton, the architect of this emotional but tender family drama, did not go unnoticed, earning a nomination for Breakthrough Director.
