Movie debuts November 24 on Showtime
The rare film to get a simultaneous theatrical and Showtime release, The Humans is also the rare holiday movie to center on Thanksgiving rather than Christmas, though heartwarming, it's not. Playwright Stephen Karam makes his film directorial debut with an adaptation of his own Tony-winning one-act play (which was also a Pulitzer finalist) about three generations of a family that gather for Thanksgiving at a run-down Manhattan apartment. The dialogue-heavy film takes a dark turn as the day progresses—so much so that in some places The Humans is listed as a horror film. (But it's not entirely grim; some sources also list it as a comedy.) Even when they couldn't pinpoint its genre, many critics enthusiastically praised Humans when it debuted at TIFF in September. Jayne Houdyshell reprises her Tony-winning role from the play and is joined in the film by the excellent cast of Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, June Squibb, Beanie Feldstein, and Amy Schumer.
