Indie developer Matt Thorson (aka Matt Makes Games) impressed critics with his multiplayer archery combat game TowerFall (later TowerFall Ascension). His follow-up arrives next week for all current consoles plus PC. Celeste is very different from its (unrelated) predecessor, focusing on single-player, story-driven gameplay.
But what it is, really, is a 2D platformer—and one with over 600 retro-styled but tricky stages that ask you to guide a woman named Madeline to the summit of a mountain. Unlockable B-side chapters make the game even harder, but an assist mode is also available to help less skilled gamers. A very preliminary version of the game is available to play online.
