Miniseries debuts May 5 on HBO Max
A fictionalized take on the sensational true-crime (or is it?) story first told in the critically acclaimed docuseries of the same name, HBO Max's The Staircase stars Colin Firth as crime novelist Michael Peterson, whose wife Kathleen (played here by Toni Collette) died at the family's home after tumbling down a flight of stairs. Was she murdered by Michael, or was it, as he maintains, an accident? There have been multiple trials over the past two decades in an attempt to reach a conclusive answer to that question. Want to know more of the story beforehand? The original docuseries, which has been updated several times with additional developments since its 2004 release, can be found now on Netflix. But if you are the type of person who hates spoilers, you'll want to go in without reading anything more about one of the twistier cases in recent memory.
The new adaptation comes from Antonio Campos (who also directs six episodes, with the rest handled by Fear Street's Leigh Janiak) and Maggie Cohn, and they have enlisted a terrific cast that also includes Juliette Binoche, Parker Posey, Rosemarie DeWitt, Sophie Turner, Dane DeHaan, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jim Rash, and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Early reviews are excellent for the miniseries, which arrives with three episodes on day one followed by weekly single-episode drops through June 9.
