23 TV Shows to Watch in May: Snowpiercer, The Eddy, Quiz, Ramy, The Great, Central Park, and more
In the gallery above, our editors have selected the most interesting TV shows (including TV movies and specials) debuting this month, listed in order by premiere date.
New streaming service debuts May 27. AT&T/WarnerMedia enters the increasingly competitive streaming wars this month with the confusingly named HBO Max, which is neither TV nor HBO but an all-new streaming service. Some HBO and AT&T subscribers will get the service free, possibly for a limited time—while paid subscriptions run $15 monthly, though a cheaper tier with ads will be added later this year—and Max will include all regular HBO content (but your regular HBO subscription will not include Max content, so there's zero reason not to switch to Max).
Of the six HBO Max originals debuting today, three are for kids (including crafting competition Craftopia, a talk show from Sesame Street's Elmo, and a Looney Tunes series, and a fourth is a reality show (voguing competition Legendary). The fifth is the well-reviewed documentary film On the Record, previously slated for Apple TV+, which chronicles the sexual assault allegations against hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons.
The final original is the only scripted series available at launch. Love Life (pictured above) is a rom-com anthology series from Anna Kendrick, Paul Feig, and writer/director Sam Boyd. Each season will follow a single main character on their quest for love, and this first season stars Kendrick alongside Lesley Manville, Scoot McNairy, Sasha Compere, and Zoe Chao.
In addition to the above titles, HBO Max will have a fairly hefty catalog available at launch, including the complete runs of TV shows like Friends (yes, that's why it's no longer on Netflix), Doctor Who, and The Big Bang Theory. Movie highlights include the entire Studio Ghibli catalog as well as most of the DC Comics film library.
