11 Films to See in May
May marks the official start of the summer movie season. While that means the usual assortment of superhero films (including, this week, the rather promising Captain America: Civil War), this May will also bring an atypically strong crop of indie and foreign releases, including new films from Whit Stillman, Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, Rebecca Miller, and more.
Writer-director Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, The Ballad of Jack and Rose) shifts into a lighter, more comedic tone with this story of the titular Maggie (Greta Gerwig), whose plan to become a single mother gets derailed when she falls in love with professor and aspiring novelist John (Ethan Hawke). Unfortunately, John is married to Georgette (Julianne Moore), but when John decides to leave his wife, Maggie makes a new plan for herself with the help of her married best friends, Tony (Bill Hader) and Felicia (Maya Rudolph). When it played in Toronto last year, this entertaining dramedy won acclaim for its smart screenplay and sharp ensemble.
