11 Films to See in May
May marks the official start of the summer movie season. While that means the usual assortment of superhero films (including, this week, the rather promising Captain America: Civil War), this May will also bring an atypically strong crop of indie and foreign releases, including new films from Whit Stillman, Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, Rebecca Miller, and more.
Director Athina Rachel Tsangari’s previous feature, Attenberg, was a unique female coming-of-age story. In her latest, she shifts her focus to examine masculinity in the modern age. Set on a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea, Chevalier follows six men whose fishing trip turns into a contest when a game is introduced to determine who is “the best at everything” or the “Chevalier.” Early reviews call it “sublimely ridiculous” and an “intriguing and thoroughly original character study.”
