11 Films to See in May
May marks the official start of the summer movie season. While that means the usual assortment of superhero films (including, this week, the rather promising Captain America: Civil War), this May will also bring an atypically strong crop of indie and foreign releases, including new films from Whit Stillman, Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, Rebecca Miller, and more.
The Captain America series has gained the most consistent critical praise of any franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this third film is nearing Iron Man's record for the highest Metascore of any Marvel movie. It’s a good starting point for Marvel’s Phase 3, which continues later this year with Doctor Strange.
Picking up after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Civil War finds the tension between Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark coming to a head as William Hurt’s General Ross (from The Incredible Hulk) exerts his influence. Adding juice to the fight are two new characters. Chadwick Boseman plays Black Panther, while Tom Holland makes his debut as Spider-Man. Returning directors Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) have plenty to juggle, with Marvel cast-members Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Emily VanCamp, Paul Rudd and Frank Grillo all returning.
