11 Films to See in May
May marks the official start of the summer movie season. While that means the usual assortment of superhero films (including, this week, the rather promising Captain America: Civil War), this May will also bring an atypically strong crop of indie and foreign releases, including new films from Whit Stillman, Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, Rebecca Miller, and more.
Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and called the “best documentary about a political campaign ever made” by Indiewire, this debut feature from directors Elyse Steinberg and Josh Kriegman (Anthony Weiner’s chief of staff from 2005 to 2006) follows Weiner’s attempt to re-enter politics after the former congressman was exposed (literally and figuratively) in a 2011 sexting scandal. The focus here is on Weiner’s disastrous bid to become mayor of New York in 2014. The film has earned additional interest from pundits because of its portrayal of Huma Abedin, Weiner’s wife and one of Hillary Clinton’s top aides.
