11 Films to See in May
May marks the official start of the summer movie season. While that means the usual assortment of superhero films (including, this week, the rather promising Captain America: Civil War), this May will also bring an atypically strong crop of indie and foreign releases, including new films from Whit Stillman, Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, Rebecca Miller, and more.
Tilda Swinton reunites with her I Am Love director for this remake of Jacques Deray’s 1969 film La Piscine. Swinton plays a rock star whose idyllic Italian island vacation with her filmmaker boyfriend (Matthias Schoenaerts) is disrupted by an old friend (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter (Dakota Johnson). Swinton’s character, who has been rendered almost speechless after vocal chord surgery, contrasts with Fiennes’ comedic chatterbox, but both performances earned praise from many critics (despite the film receiving a few boos) when it premiered in Venice last year.
