Expanding her 2018 short film, Jamie Dack took home the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival for this examination of the relationship between Lea (Lily McInerny), a restless 17-year-old, and Tom (Jonathan Tucker), a man twice her age. With a supporting turn by Gretchen Mol as Lea’s mom and four Spirit Award nominations for Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Breakthrough Performance for McInerny, and Best Supporting Performance for Tucker, Palm Trees is a fearless and haunting debut.
