10 Films to See in March
The arrival of spring should bring with it some better (or at least bigger) options at the cineplex, including a promising new Disney animated film, a semi-sequel to Cloverfield, and a big question mark in Batman v Superman. But this month's big effects-driven disaster pic comes not from Hollywood, but from Norway. Art houses will also be graced with new films from noted directors Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Terrence Malick, Jeff Nichols, and Arnaud Desplechin.
Its release had been anticipated since 2014, but when the mysterious Knight of Cups finally premiered in Berlin a little over a year ago, Terrence Malick’s latest film received about the same reaction as his previous effort, 2013’s To the Wonder, which was the worst-reviewed movie of his career. Cups follows Christian Bale’s Rick, a writer, as he indulges in a life of excess, has relationships with six different women (Cate Blanchett, Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Natalie Portman, Teresa Palmer and Isabel Lucas) and struggles with his feelings toward his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy). If this film doesn’t satisfy, Malick fans can look forward to his other possible 2016 releases: Weightless, a love story set against the music scene of Austin, TX (returning Bale alongside Rooney Mara and Michael Fassbender), and the documentary Voyage of Time.
