The arrival of spring should bring with it some better (or at least bigger) options at the cineplex, including a promising new Disney animated film, a semi-sequel to Cloverfield, and a big question mark in Batman v Superman. But this month's big effects-driven disaster pic comes not from Hollywood, but from Norway. Art houses will also be graced with new films from noted directors Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Terrence Malick, Jeff Nichols, and Arnaud Desplechin.
Writer-director Apichatpong "Joe" Weerasethakul won the Palme d’Or in 2010 for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Last year, this story of a housewife who volunteers to look after soldiers suffering from a a mysterious sleeping sickness played in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, earning excellent reviews and landing on some year-end top 10 lists. It finally arrives in North American theaters this week, as does Joe’s hour-long 2012 oddity Mekong Hotel (screening here for the first time).
