Out of all of the modern-era Star Trek shows, it is Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds that most closely matches the format and tone of both the original series and The Next Generation—and not just because it happens to be set once again aboard the USS Enterprise. The mostly episodic (rather than serialized) series takes place during the decade before the original show when the ship is captained by Christopher Pike (played winningly by Anson Mount), though there are also a few familiar names in the crew including Spock (Ethan Peck), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). But this second season adds an even more familiar name in the form of Paul Wesley's James T. Kirk. Additional newcomers include Carol Kane, while season 2 will also bring a franchise-first hybrid animation/live-action episode that crosses over with characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks (who technically live in a different century, though that's not much of an obstacle for a time-travel-obsessed franchise).
