14 Films to See in June
June will bring more than just the usual assortment of explosions and CGI effects to the cineplex. There are promising new films from Edgar Wright, Sofia Coppola, and Bong Joon-ho, an unusually large number of well-reviewed indie comedies, and a terrific new horror film. As in her acclaimed debut feature (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour creates a unique world for her main character—in this case, a girl played by Suki Waterhouse who is cast out into a desert wasteland populated by bodybuilding cannibals (one played by Jason Momoa), a cult leader known as The Dream (Keanu Reeves), and a mute scavenger played by Jim Carrey. Early reviews have been split on this bold new vision from the director, but she did receive a Special Jury Prize when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last fall.
