14 Films to See in June
June will bring more than just the usual assortment of explosions and CGI effects to the cineplex. There are promising new films from Edgar Wright, Sofia Coppola, and Bong Joon-ho, an unusually large number of well-reviewed indie comedies, and a terrific new horror film. There's also something even more rare: a good DC Comics film. Find details on these and all of June's most notable releases below.
The latest from director Bong Joon-ho received good reviews when it premiered in the Cannes Film Festival competition last week. The film is an occasionally rough combination of action-adventure fable and anti-capitalism satire, starring An Seo Hyun as Mija, a young girl who risks her life to protect her best friend—a massive animal named Okja. The supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton (in two roles), Jake Gyllenhaal (in a divisive performance), Paul Dano, Shirley Henderson, and Giancarlo Esposito. It might not reach the heights of Snowpiercer or The Host, but it’s another solid effort from a talented director.
