11 Films to See in June
With summer movie season in full swing, you can expect multiple sequels (with Pixar's Finding Dory the most notable) in June. But you'll also find a surprising number of original and unconventional titles in theaters, including new films from Nicolas Winding Refn, Todd Solondz, Noah Baumbach, Taika Waititi, and more.
In this four-part anthology, writer-director Todd Solondz revisits one of his early (and best-known) characters, Dawn Wiener of Welcome to the Dollhouse. But the director is as unsentimental as ever, delivering a series of dark yet humorous stories that follow the titular female Dachshund’s travels.
In the first story, parents Julie Delpy and Tracy Letts purchase the dog for their son, a nine-year-old cancer survivor (Keaton Nigel Cooke). Then Solondz catches up with Ms. Wiener, now a veterinary nurse played by Greta Gerwig. The dog’s last two stops find her in the lap of a bitter film professor played by Danny DeVito, and finally with a grandmother (Ellen Burstyn) and her ungrateful granddaughter (Zosia Mamet).
