Amid the usual summer blockbusters—including a return to the Bourne franchise for Matt Damon and a family adventure from Steven Spielberg—the month ahead will also feature intriguing smaller films that have already made an impression on the festival circuit over the past year. We've picked out a handful of July's best bets below—as well as one major wildcard.

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Roger Ross Williams (God Loves Uganda) won the documentary directing award for this look at Owen Suskind, an autistic young man who learned to communicate with his family through Disney animated films. According to early reviews, it’s an inspiring look at the perseverance and love required to deal with such a complex disorder.
