10 (or Maybe 11) Films to See in July
Amid the usual summer blockbusters—including a return to the Bourne franchise for Matt Damon and a family adventure from Steven Spielberg—the month ahead will also feature intriguing smaller films that have already made an impression on the festival circuit over the past year. We've picked out a handful of July's best bets below—as well as one major wildcard.
When his film premiered at Sundance in January, critics agreed that James Schamus had made a smooth transition from writer/producer/executive to director. His adaptation of Philip Roth’s 2008 novel follows Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a Jewish college student from Newark who clashes with the dean (Tracy Letts) of the Lutheran college he attends. While he is there, Marcus also falls for a fellow student, the mysterious Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon). For many who have seen the film, the highlight is a 15-minute showdown between Lerman and Letts.
